Robert Philson, a known racist and homophobe, as well as the star of popular reality show Quail Empire, is arrested after police find him on top of and punching an individual of another race at a bus stop. Reporters catch wind and print the story, “Waiting for Justice: A Bus Stop Beating.” After the case comes across your desk, you check a surveillance tape from the parking lot across from the bus stop. The video shows that Mr. Philson was peacefully sitting on a bench and was, himself, attacked. He appeared to have been defending himself and gained the upper hand only as police arrived. This is Mr. Philson’s first offense. Racially-motivated assault is a hate crime punishable by a 3 to 7 year prison sentence while simple assault carries only a 1 to 2 year sentence.
