The Rosca de Reyes is eaten on January 6th based on the
Three Wise Men, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, who
visited Baby Jesus after his birth. Warned in a dream that
King Herod intended to kill th
e child, the Three Wise Men
decided to take a different route home, and Mary and
Joseph escaped with Baby Jesus to Egypt beforehand.
The circular shape represents a King's crown. The bread contains
toy figurines of Baby Jesus hidden inside, symbolizing how
Mary and Joseph hid the baby to escape King Herod through
the desert, which is why the bread is decorated with fruits
found in the desert such as the candied prickly pear cactus.
Whoever finds figurine becomes the baby's protector or
godfather, who will present the baby to the local church on
February 2nd, and buy tamales to host a party celebrating the
presentation of Jesus at the Temple (The Candelaria Feast).
