The year is 2000, but Earth is a dark, bleak place. There are no cell phones, no hospitals, and no cars. Technology seems to not exist, and people die from a common cold. Yet miles above Earth there h
overs a sleek building that glitters with light and life. This is the home of the Elite, a group of scientists that rules over the world. They devote their lives to scientific advancement, and carefully select their members from among the poor, stupid, dying billions below with a mandatory intelligence and physical adeptness at ages 10 and 21. They are harsh rulers of the common folk, but they are also harsh to those among their number. If it is found that one of the Elite has betrayed secrets, or their work is no longer viable and they refuse to switch studies, their body is "donated to science" which is a nice way to say that they are imprisoned and kept as a source of spare body parts to any scientist whose research may require it.
Among the poor diseased citizens below are those who hate the rule of the Elite, but mainly, there are those who love it. They believe that the Elite moved away from them for the safety of their souls, and that their God would not accept them into Heaven if they tainted their bodies with anything man made, and shunned technology and medicine in the name of staying as God intended them to be.
