You came into this with the purest of intentions. Those cast away for this sin often start out as the most devoted of them all. But, you noticed that, for some reason, it was difficult to hold onto those pure intentions. You bore witness to your friends either slowly becoming more radically obsessed with elimination of sin, or being cast away. It took years, but you eventually realized the corruption present here -- corruption that goes all the way to the top.
