The side character that is very dear to the narrator but doesn't know it
"Once, they had been able to see one another. Now, they gazed at each other for a long moment and could only see their own reflection."
In my story, you would likely be the character that is important to the main character in ways neither of you is able to admit. You are too similar where you should be different and too different where you should similar. The readers would likely root for you, for I would give your character a lot of attention in the development department.
